An Extremity Soft Tissue Ultrasound is a safe, noninvasive imaging examination that uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed, real-time images of the soft tissues of the arms and legs. This examination evaluates structures just beneath the skin, including the muscles, tendons, ligaments, fat, and other superficial soft tissues, without the use of radiation, needles, or contrast dye.

An extremity soft tissue ultrasound is commonly performed to evaluate palpable lumps, soft tissue masses, cysts, fluid collections, hematomas, muscle injuries, tendon abnormalities, and other localized concerns affecting the upper or lower extremities. It can also help distinguish between solid and fluid-filled masses and assess the size, location, and characteristics of superficial abnormalities.

During the examination, a handheld ultrasound transducer is gently moved over the area of concern to obtain detailed images. Because ultrasound provides real-time imaging, the technologist may ask you to move the affected arm, hand, leg, or foot during the examination to better evaluate certain muscles, tendons, or other soft tissue structures.

What to Expect During Your Examination

An Extremity Soft Tissue Ultrasound is a safe, painless, and noninvasive examination that typically takes 20–30 minutes to complete. During the study, you will be positioned comfortably while an experienced ultrasound technologist performs the examination.

A warm, water-based ultrasound gel will be applied to the skin over the area of concern. The technologist will gently move a handheld ultrasound transducer across the affected arm or leg to obtain detailed, real-time images of the muscles, tendons, ligaments, fat, and other superficial soft tissues.

Depending on the reason for your examination, you may be asked to move the affected extremity, flex or extend a joint, or change positions during the study. These simple movements allow the technologist to evaluate certain muscles and tendons dynamically and obtain the most accurate images.

The examination is generally very comfortable. You may feel mild pressure from the transducer, especially if the area being examined is tender, but the procedure should not be painful. There are no needles, injections, contrast dye, or radiation involved.

Once all of the necessary images have been obtained, the gel will be wiped away, and your examination is complete. Your interpreting physician will review the images, and a report will be sent to your healthcare provider.
