A warm, water-based ultrasound gel will be applied to the skin over the area of concern. The technologist will gently move a handheld ultrasound transducer across the affected area to obtain detailed, real-time images of the soft tissues, including fat, connective tissue, muscles, tendons, and any palpable lump or abnormality.

Depending on the location being examined, you may be asked to change your position or move the affected area during the examination. These simple movements help provide the clearest possible images and allow certain soft tissue structures to be evaluated dynamically.

The examination is generally very comfortable. You may feel mild pressure from the transducer, especially if the area being examined is tender, but the procedure should not be painful. There are no needles, injections, contrast dye, or radiation involved.
