What to Expect During Your Examination
A Thyroid Ultrasound is a safe, painless, and noninvasive examination that typically takes 20–30 minutes to complete. During the study, you will lie comfortably on an examination table while an experienced ultrasound technologist performs the examination.

You will be asked to lie on your back with your head slightly tilted backward to provide the best view of your thyroid gland. A small pillow or support may be placed beneath your shoulders or neck for added comfort. A warm, water-based ultrasound gel will be applied to the front of your neck, and the technologist will gently move a handheld ultrasound transducer over the area to obtain detailed images of your thyroid gland and, when appropriate, the surrounding lymph nodes.

The examination is generally very comfortable. You may feel mild pressure from the transducer, but the procedure should not be painful. There are no needles, injections, contrast dye, or radiation involved.
During the examination, you may be asked to swallow or briefly hold still while certain images are obtained. These simple instructions help provide the clearest possible images.

Once all of the necessary images have been obtained, the gel will be wiped away, and your examination is complete. Your interpreting physician will review the images, and a report will be sent to your healthcare provider.
