What Is a Prostate Ultrasound (Transabdominal)?
A Prostate Ultrasound (Transabdominal) is a safe, noninvasive imaging examination that uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed, real-time images of the prostate gland through the lower abdomen. The examination is performed with a handheld ultrasound transducer placed on the skin above the pubic bone and does not require insertion of a probe into the rectum. It also does not involve radiation, needles, or contrast dye.

A transabdominal prostate ultrasound is commonly performed to evaluate the size, shape, and appearance of the prostate gland. It can help identify prostate enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH), bladder outlet obstruction, prostate calcifications, and other abnormalities that may contribute to urinary symptoms.

This examination is often performed in conjunction with an evaluation of the bladder, allowing assessment of bladder wall thickness, bladder distention, and post-void residual (PVR) to determine how well the bladder empties after urination.

A Prostate Ultrasound (Transabdominal) is a comfortable examination that typically takes 20–30 minutes to complete. It provides valuable diagnostic information while avoiding radiation and invasive procedures, making it an excellent first-line imaging test for evaluating a variety of prostate and urinary conditions.
Why Is a Prostate Ultrasound (Transabdominal) Performed?
A Prostate Ultrasound (Transabdominal) is performed to evaluate the prostate gland and help identify conditions that may be causing urinary symptoms or other prostate-related concerns. It provides detailed, real-time images of the prostate through the lower abdomen without the use of radiation, contrast dye, or invasive procedures.

This examination is commonly performed to assess prostate enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH), which can contribute to symptoms such as frequent urination, difficulty starting or stopping urination, a weak urine stream, incomplete bladder emptying, or getting up multiple times during the night to urinate.

A Prostate Ultrasound (Transabdominal) may also be used to evaluate bladder outlet obstruction, measure the size of the prostate, identify prostate calcifications, and assess the bladder before and after urination to determine how well it empties. It is often performed as part of the evaluation for men with persistent urinary symptoms or as a follow-up examination to monitor known prostate conditions.

Because ultrasound is safe, painless, and radiation-free, it is an excellent first-line imaging test for evaluating the prostate and helping guide diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of prostate and urinary conditions.
Common Reasons to Schedule a Prostate Ultrasound (Transabdominal)
A Prostate Ultrasound (Transabdominal) is performed to evaluate the prostate gland and help determine the cause of urinary symptoms or other prostate-related concerns. You may benefit from this examination if you are experiencing changes in urination or require evaluation or follow-up of a known prostate condition.

-
Frequent urination
-
Difficulty starting urination
-
Weak or interrupted urine stream
-
Difficulty emptying the bladder completely
-
Getting up multiple times at night to urinate (nocturia)
-
Urinary urgency or frequency
-
Suspected enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH)
-
Evaluation for bladder outlet obstruction
-
Measurement of prostate size
-
Assessment of post-void residual (PVR) urine
-
Follow-up of a known prostate condition
-
Evaluation of abnormal findings from a physical examination or another imaging study
Â
A Prostate Ultrasound (Transabdominal) provides detailed, real-time images of the prostate and may also evaluate the bladder when appropriate. It is a safe, painless, and radiation-free examination that helps guide diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care for a variety of prostate and urinary conditions.
What to Expect During Your Examination
A Prostate Ultrasound (Transabdominal) is a safe, painless, and noninvasive examination that typically takes 20–30 minutes to complete. During the study, you will lie comfortably on an examination table while an experienced ultrasound technologist performs the examination.

You will be asked to arrive with a comfortably full bladder, as this helps improve visualization of the prostate gland through the lower abdomen. A warm, water-based ultrasound gel will be applied to your lower abdomen, and the technologist will gently move a handheld transducer over the area to obtain detailed images of the prostate gland. In many cases, images of the bladder will also be obtained before and after you urinate to measure the post-void residual (PVR), which helps determine how well your bladder empties.

The examination is generally very comfortable. You may feel mild pressure from the transducer or temporary discomfort from having a full bladder, but the procedure should not be painful. There are no needles, injections, contrast dye, or radiation involved.

Once all of the necessary images have been obtained, the gel will be wiped away, and your examination is complete. Your interpreting physician will review the images, and a report will be sent to your healthcare provider. If you scheduled your examination as a self-pay patient, we will explain how and when your results will be communicated.
How to Prepare for Your Prostate Ultrasound (Transabdominal)
Proper preparation helps ensure the clearest possible images of your prostate and bladder. Arriving with a comfortably full bladder is an important part of this examination.

Before Your Appointment

✓ Drink 24–32 ounces (3–4 cups) of water about one hour before your appointment.
✓ Do not empty your bladder before the examination. A comfortably full bladder helps improve visualization of the prostate gland and allows evaluation of bladder emptying if a post-void residual (PVR) measurement is performed.
✓ You may eat and drink normally unless your healthcare provider has given you different instructions.
✓ Continue taking your usual medications unless instructed otherwise.
✓ Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to your lower abdomen.
✓ Bring any previous prostate imaging studies or reports if they were performed at another facility.
✓ Arrive 10–15 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork before your examination.

Following these preparation instructions helps ensure the best possible visualization of your prostate gland and bladder, allowing your Prostate Ultrasound (Transabdominal) to be performed as accurately and efficiently as possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is a transabdominal prostate ultrasound the same as a transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)?
A: No. A Prostate Ultrasound (Transabdominal) is performed through the lower abdomen and does not require insertion of a probe into the rectum. While it may not provide the same level of detail as a transrectal ultrasound, it still offers excellent information about prostate size, enlargement, bladder outlet obstruction, and other common prostate conditions in a comfortable, noninvasive manner.

Q: Do I need a full bladder for the examination?
A: Yes. A comfortably full bladder helps improve visualization of the prostate gland and allows assessment of bladder emptying if a post-void residual (PVR) measurement is performed.

Q: Is a prostate ultrasound painful?
A: No. The examination is generally painless. You may feel mild pressure from the transducer or temporary discomfort from having a full bladder, but the procedure should not be painful.

Q: Is there any radiation involved?
A: No. Prostate ultrasound uses sound waves rather than radiation, making it a safe imaging examination.

Q: How long does the examination take?
A: Most Prostate Ultrasound (Transabdominal) examinations take approximately 20–30 minutes, depending on whether additional bladder images or a post-void residual (PVR) measurement are performed.

Q: Do I need a referral to schedule a prostate ultrasound?
A: No. You can schedule a Prostate Ultrasound (Transabdominal) with a healthcare provider's referral or as a self-pay patient. Your examination will be performed by an experienced ultrasound technologist, interpreted by a physician, and our team is always happy to answer any questions before or after your appointment.
