What to Expect During Your Examination
A Segmental Pressure Study is a safe, painless, and noninvasive examination that evaluates blood flow throughout your legs. The study typically takes 30–45 minutes, and you can return to your normal activities immediately afterward.

During the examination, you will lie comfortably on an examination table while a vascular technologist places specialized blood pressure cuffs around your arms, thighs, calves, and ankles. In some cases, a small cuff may also be placed on your toe if additional circulation measurements are needed.

The cuffs are inflated one at a time, similar to having your blood pressure checked. While each cuff is inflated, a handheld Doppler ultrasound device is used to detect blood flow and measure arterial blood pressure at each level of your legs. Comparing these pressure measurements helps identify where blood flow may be reduced due to narrowing or blockage of an artery.

You may feel a brief squeezing sensation as the cuffs inflate, but the examination is generally well tolerated and should not be painful. There are no needles, injections, contrast dye, or radiation involved.

Once all measurements have been completed, the cuffs are removed, and your examination is finished. The results will be reviewed by your interpreting physician, and a report will be sent to your healthcare provider.
