During the examination, you will be asked to lie comfortably on an examination table or sit in a relaxed position while a vascular technologist places small photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors on one or more fingers or toes. Small blood pressure cuffs may also be placed on your fingers, toes, arms, or ankles, depending on the area being evaluated.

The examination begins by measuring blood pressure and blood flow while you are resting comfortably. The PPG sensors detect tiny changes in blood volume with each heartbeat, allowing the technologist to evaluate circulation in the small arteries supplying your fingers or toes.
